Authority and scope
Check the license and concern
Idaho has three separate DOPL boards for psychologists; professional counselors and marriage/family therapists; and social workers, including clinical social work. Each board provides a “File a Complaint Against a Licensee” link. The counselors board directs drug/alcohol certification inquiries to the Idaho Board of Alcohol/Drug Counselor Certification (IBADCC); that separate certification process was not checked. Do not assume DOPL handles a complaint solely because someone advertises addiction counseling.

Match the route to the credential
Use the license listed in the practitioner’s records or official license lookup. A psychiatrist is a physician; psychiatric nurses have nursing credentials. Some psychologists have prescribing authority, so medication alone does not identify the licensing board.

Open this official route ↗Confirm the filing instructions
- Start with the board matching the credential and its File a Complaint link to DOPL Online Services. The public link was confirmed, but the form returned a cookies-required notice. Required fields, signatures, notarization, alternatives and record-release requirements were not established; ask DOPL for help if the portal will not load.
- For routing assistance call DOPL at 208-334-3233. The psychology board lists HP-Licensing@dopl.idaho.gov; the counselors/MFT and social-work boards list OL-Licensing@dopl.idaho.gov. These are contact addresses, not verified email-filing instructions.
- Prepare the practitioner’s full name, credential, treatment location and dates, a factual chronology and relevant copies. Ask which therapy records are needed and whether the patient or a legal representative must authorize their release.

What this route may not provide
The checked DOPL material describes professional discipline. It did not establish whether these boards can order fee repayment or other monetary relief. Ask about the remedy you want and whether a facility, employer or program complaint requires another agency. A professional title used in advertising is not a substitute for identifying the license.
Do not guess about confidentiality
Anonymous acceptance and protection of the complainant’s identity were not established. DOPL’s general process gives the practitioner a chance to respond. A final stipulation and consent order is public; do not treat an investigation as a promise of permanent secrecy.

Ask promptly about filing time limits
A filing deadline was not established by this check; ask promptly. DOPL says investigation length varies with complexity, witnesses, professional review and board meetings.

What may happen after filing
Anyone may bring a complaint. DOPL screens jurisdiction and possible rule violations. A neutral investigator may interview participants and gather records; the board may close the matter or pursue settlement or a formal hearing and final order.

Prepare a reviewable submission
State the concern you want reviewed, give a short chronology and factual consequences, and explain your request. Keep supporting records and follow the receiving authority’s instructions before attaching or sending them.
