LARA Bureau of Professional Licensing; profession-specific medicine, osteopathic and physician-assistant regulators

Complaint instructions checked against the linked sources, with limitations and known conflicts. Confirm that the authority covers your concern.

Authority and scope

Check the professional and concern

LARA's Bureau of Professional Licensing (BPL) accepts complaints for Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, and Physician's Assistant as separate profession categories. M.D. and D.O. boards are distinct, although they use this shared intake. Select the actual license category; do not label a PA as a physician.

Submission

How the official source says to file

  • Follow File Complaint Now on the official BPL page to MiPLUS. BPL supplies account-registration and complaint-filing guidance on that page.
  • Prepare the licensee's name and profession, dates, locations, a detailed account, medical records or bills supporting it, and contact information for witnesses or subsequent providers.
  • The citizen guide requests your name and contact information. For filing questions or access help, contact Complaint Intake at 517-241-0205 or BPL-Complaints@michigan.gov. Email was not verified as a substitute for portal submission.

Limits

What this route may not provide

BPL evaluates possible Public Health Code violations. The disciplinary process can lead to reprimand, fines, probation, practice restrictions, suspension or revocation. It can close complaints outside its authority or without evidence of a violation. These instructions do not establish a patient-compensation or refund remedy.

Anonymity

Do not guess about confidentiality

The citizen guide discourages anonymous complaints because inability to obtain follow-up information can cause closure. BPL describes complainant identity as confidential, with written-release and hearing/testimony qualifications. The preparation webpage says the name stays confidential unless testimony is required; do not interpret either source as an unconditional secrecy promise.

Complaint timing

Filing deadline not established; ask promptly

A filing deadline was not established by this check; ask promptly about the license and conduct involved. The official process includes investigation, possible expert review, settlement discussions and hearings, without a fixed completion promise. A licensee's response deadline after formal charges is not the patient's filing period.

Process

What may happen after filing

BPL screens for a possible violation, then may seek investigation authorization, gather documents and interviews, obtain expert review, close the file, or issue an administrative complaint. The profession's disciplinary subcommittee determines final action. BPL says it notifies the complainant if the matter closes.
